Difference between standardization and titration

The major difference between standardization and titration is that standardization is a process that mainly uses primary standard solutions and is used to determine the exact concentration of a prepared solution, while titration is a process that does not use primary standard solutions and is used to determine unknown concentrations of samples.

In analytical chemistry, titration and standardization are two chemical terms that are related with each other. Even though they use the same method to obtain measurements, their applications are very different. The term "standardization" refers to the process of estimating the precise concentration of a prepared solution. The term "titration" refers to the process of estimating unknown sample concentrations. Standardization is frequently performed as titration.

Mostly, standardization is also done in the form of titrations. For standardization, the burette is filled with primary standard solution and for titration, the burette is filled with a primary standard solution or any other standard solution. The solution that needs to be standardized is placed in a conical flask for standardization; On the other hand, the solution which contains a chemical component with unknown concentration is placed in a conical flask for the titration process.

What is titration?

Titration is also known as titrimetry, it is a volumetric analysis that is used to determine the concentration of analyte in a sample solution. It consists of a titrant which is filled into a burette, a pipette that is used to introduce the titrand into the conical flask where the reaction takes place. A titrant of known concentration is added until the reaction is completed i.e. the chemical equivalence point.

The endpoint of the titration is the point at which the reaction is completed. An indication is employed to find the endpoint, which changes the color of the sample solution at the equivalence point. An instrumental method such as a pH meter, potentiometer, or conductivity is also used to determine the exact endpoint. Depending on the chemical reaction between the titrant and the compound, there are four types of titrations, acid-base titrations, redox titrations, precipitation titrations, and complexometric titrations.

What is standardization?

Standardization is an analytical technique that uses a primary or secondary standard solution to determine an unknown concentration. Titration is the most often used technique for standardizing a solution.

A standard solution is essential as a reference in the standardization process. There are two types of standard solutions: primary standard solutions and secondary standard solutions. We employ primary standard solutions for accurate standardizations. These solutions are extremely pure.

Difference between standardization and titration:

  • The process of standardization is used to measure the exact concentration of a solution, while titration is used to determine the concentration of certain chemical compounds in a sample solution.
  • Standardization is a technique for determining the precise concentration of a solution that is prepared for another analysis, while titration is a technique for determining an unknown chemical component's concentration in a sample.
  • For standardization primary standard solution is filled in the burette, while for titration, a primary standard solution or any other standardized solution is filled in the burette,
  • The solution that needs to be standardized is placed in the conical flask for standardization, while a solution containing a chemical component with an unknown concentration is taken for titration.

Why is standardization necessary in titration?

Each time the titrant needs to be standardized before titration. The basic purpose of standardization is to determine titrant concentration. For example, if we prepare a 0.1 N NaOH solution, we must first determine the exact normality of the solution to perform an accurate calculation.

What is the difference between standard and standardization?

The major difference between standard and standardization is that the standard is a principle, measure, or example used for comparison, whereas the standardization is the process of complying with a standard.
